Dunedin with a French flair this week

Dunedin is getting a flair of France this week! #AllBlacksvsLesBleus

AF Dunedin will be at this Saturday’s farmers’ market, and we will try to give some French flair to this week’s market! We are looking for volunteers to help us!

So if :
– you are keen to come and spend the morning with us, helping run the stall, or
– you are a musician, singer, or mime, and are keen to give some very French performance for the Dunedin crowd, or
– you have some very French looking decorations for a stall, or a good sound system, that you are willing to lend us for this Saturday morning,

Then let us know!

Yesterday, Tamara Freeland in Year 10 won two premium tickets to the All Blacks v France match on Saturday. The tickets were won by Bayfield High School in a competition run by the Alliance Francaise Dunedin, and then Ms. McDonald gave them to the languages student who could accumulate the most points on the website Duolingo. Bravo, Tamara!

Pictured are Dr. Kim Cousins (Vice President of the Alliance Francaise), Ms. McDonald and Tamara Freeland.

If you haven’t got tickets to the Stadium, you can still come watch it with us in our clubrooms at 15 Bond Street!

French King’s cake tradition (from Wikipedia):

The cake traditionally celebrating Epiphany in France, Belgium and Quebec is sold in most bakeries during the month of January.

Three versions of cake are used, either circular or rectangular. They can be made from flaky puff pastry layers with a dense center of frangipane or apple,  a form of sweetcrust pastry, or a torus-shaped brioche with candied fruits and sugar, similar in its shape and colors to a crown.

The cake was traditionally divided into as many shares (slices) as there were guests, plus one. The latter, called “the share of God,” “share of the Virgin Mary,” or “share of the poor” was intended for the first poor person to arrive at the home. feve

Hidden in the cake is la fève. It is traditional for the youngest person to sit under the table and call out each name of the person attending (helped by the person in charge of the service), to make sure each share of the cake is distributed randomly, until  la fève is found!

The person who finds the trinket in his or her slice becomes king for the day and will have to offer the next cake (and gets to wear the crown).
